Overview

Sumter Utilities, Inc. (a Quanta Services company) seeks entire Underground Crews (Foreman/A Lineman/B Lineman/C Lineman/Operator/Groundman).

 

Successful candidates will possess existing experience working together as a construction crew  Preference may also be given to candidates who are able to bring along additional qualified candidates to form entire work crews.

All Classifications requirements

Foreman: 

  • Provide direct supervision & technical guidance to Linemen, Equipment Operators and Groundmen performing maintenance & construction on underground utility projects.
  • PROFICIENT in reading and interpreting site plans, construction prints/drawings and scopes of work.
  • PROFICIENT in safe operation of heavy equipment such as backhoes, trenchers, mini-excavators, etc.
  • Have total commitment to Safety and Compliance. Able to effectively communicate, demonstrate and enforce requirements & best practices.
  • Possess advanced understanding of compliance with OSHA Shoring & Trenching standards.
  • Must be able to effectively lead and record Job Task Safety Analysis (JTSA) meetings.
  • Must have a quality work ethic and be committed to optimal Customer Service.
  • Responsible for coordinating essential personnel on-site for the project to include crew mobilization, subcontractors, traffic control, etc.
  • Possess comfort level with using new technologies (mobile devices/apps) or show willingness to learn.  Such tools are bringing Jobsite access to improved information and efficiencies. 
  • Efficiently manage all supplies, materials and equipment necessary to complete assigned work.
  • Assist with planning, directing and budget activities concerned with the completion of underground line construction projects.
  • Communicate directly with General Foremen, Superintendents, Construction Managers, Project Managers, Line Crews and other project personnel as required.
  • Understand and follow detailed construction schedules.
  • Possess High School Diploma or Equivalency.
  • Able to coordinate & collaborate effectively with multiple levels within company...from fellow field professionals to back office support functions.
  • Willing to travel and work away from home.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, demonstrate & encourage teamwork skills and able to understand, comprehend, and follow directions in the workplace. 

A Lineman: 

  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor as required. Including but not limited to digging, rigging, lifting, rescue operations, etc.
  • Able to identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
  • Possess working knowledge of OSHA Shoring & Trenching Standards.
  • Proficient in all aspects of working with energized enclosures.
  • Possess professional demeanor and interact in positive way with fellow crew members, general public and customer representatives.
  • Proficient in understanding and reading blueprints.
  • Able to properly pull in UG conductors.
  • Capable of leading crew in preparation/installation of pad mount transformers & enclosures, in absence of Crew Foreman or with minimal supervision.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of operations in terminating UG conductors & secondaries.
  • Capable of executing live switching on UG loops.
  • Proficient at operation of Digger Derrick, Backhoe, Trencher, Mini-Excavator, Knuckle Crane, etc.
  • Proficient in all aspects of heavy lifting and rigging.
  • Must be familiar with induced voltage.
  • Proficient in grounding procedures.
  • Capable of working in confined spaces.
  • Possess knowledge to properly install, remove and inspect Rubber Goods / Cover Up / PPE.
  • Understands how to phase out a line using phasing sticks.
  • Understands proper use of phasing sticks
  • Able/willing to function within a Team environment and share knowledge with fellow crew members as appropriate.
  • Capable of planning safe work based on a job print or work order.
  • Understands minimum approach distance.
  • Understands flag and tag procedures.
  • Capable of performing basic bucket rescue/escape.
  • Must be able to effectively lead a Job Task Safety Analysis (JTSA) meeting or tailgate briefing.
  • Capable of safely installing and removing mechanical jumpers.

B Lineman:

  • Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized conductors.
  • Capable of pulling in UG conductors and setting Streetlight poles.
  • Maintains company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
  • Capable of comprehending & learning OSHA Standards for Shoring & Trenching.
  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Capable of learning distribution voltages on a circuit.
  • Must be familiar with induced voltage.
  • Capable of learning to understand and read blueprints.
  • Capable of assisting with inspecting and recognizing structural problems.
  • Capable of assisting in troubleshooting.
  • Able/willing to function within a Team environment and share knowledge with fellow crew members as appropriate.
  • Able to work alone on de-energized lines.
  • Capable of obtaining knowledge of wire pulling techniques.
  • Able to assist with installing all types of compression connections.
  • Capable of working in confined spaces.
  • Capable of properly installing and removing PPE and cover up.
  • Capable of properly inspecting rubber goods, covers and PPE.
  • Understands how to tie various lineman knots.
  • Capable of making up and using a hand line.
  • Understands principles of proper equipment set-up.

  • Be willing/able to maintain active enrollment in SUI apprenticeship program (high school diploma or equivalent is required for program enrollment).
  • Capable setting poles and anchors according to safety policies and specifications.
  • Maintains company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
  • Does all other related work as required to complete the job.
  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Capable of learning distribution voltages on a circuit.
  • Must be familiar with induced voltage.
  • Capable of learning to understand and read blueprints.
  • Capable of assisting with inspecting and recognizing structural problems.
  • Able to work productively from an aerial device.
  • Capable of assisting in troubleshooting.
  • Able/willing to function within a Team environment and share knowledge with fellow crew members as appropriate.
  • Able to work alone on de-energized lines.
  • Capable of obtaining knowledge of wire stringing techniques.
  • Capable of learning and understanding how to sag wire from structure or bucket.
  • Able to assist with assembly and erect poles to all heights.
  • Able to assist in framing and setting most basic line structures.
  • Able to assist in framing a de-energized pole structure in the air.
  • Able to assist with installing all types of compression connections.
  • Capable of working at heights and/or confined spaces.
  • Capable of properly installing and removing PPE and cover up.
  • Capable of properly inspecting rubber goods, covers and PPE.
  • Must be able to climb different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.) and possess the necessary tools to do so.
  • Understands how to tie various lineman knots.
  • Capable of making up and using a hand line.

Equipment Operator:

  • PROFICIENT in safe operation of heavy equipment such as backhoes, trenchers, mini-excavators, knuckle cranes, etc.
  • Possess professional demeanor and interact in positive way with fellow crew members, general public and customer representatives.
  • Possess basic knowledge of proper techniques for pulling in UG utility lines.
  • Maintains company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
  • Possess basic understanding of construction blueprints and how to follow under direction.
  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Possess working knowledge of rigging principles.
  • Understand the proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
  • Capable of receiving and following directions.
  • Able/willing to function within a Team environment and share knowledge with fellow crew members as appropriate.
  • Possess a basic knowledge of materials used in UG construction work.
  • Understands the basic concepts of equipment set up.
  • Capable of working in/around confined spaces.
  • Capable of making up and using a hand line.
  • Possess knowledge to properly inspect rubber goods, cover and PPE.

Groundman:

  • Perform various manual tasks in the construction & maintenance of underground power systems.
  • Able to understand, interpret and follow direction from Crew Foreman and senior crew members.
  • Able to comprehend and apply training in Safety, First Aid and job/task specific topics.
  • Willing and able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Apply positive teamwork with fellow crew members.
  • Demonstrate a professional appearance & attitude in dealings with co-workers, customers, subcontractors and the general public.
  • Assemble materials on the ground and as needed move into work area using safe methods.
  • Assist other crew members filling pole holes and trench using a shovel.
  • Flag traffic and set up job sites as directed.
  • Maintain organization of tools and materials on work vehicles.
  • Clean up and organize job sites at completion of work.
  • When aptitude is demonstrated and work allows, may receive training in the operation of vehicles, power equipment, tools and electrical systems.

Qualifications

The employee is required to sit; frequently climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or maneuver up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or maneuver up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Work is primarily performed outdoors so physical exposure to often extreme weather conditions, animals and insects and other outdoor hazards is unavoidable and required.
