Overview

Sumter Utilities, Inc. has an opening for a Assistant Controller. Sumter Utilities is based in Sumter, South Carolina and is a subsidiary of Quanta Services, Inc.  Sumter Utilities provides high-quality electrical construction, maintenance and modification services of transmission lines, distribution lines and substations to customers throughout the southern US.  This position reports to the Controller. 

Responsibilities

  • Know Quanta’s SOX compliance requirements and help ensure processes and controls in place meet the requirements.
  • Along with Controller, compile all necessary data to create monthly financial statements including general journal entries necessary to produce timely and accurate financial statements monthly.
  • Review payable entries to ensure proper cutoff.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts.
  • Code and apply cash receipts to customer invoices.
  • Responsible for Fixed Assets and Equipment Revenue.
  • Responsible for job burden allocation amounts and percentages.
  • Prepare weekly management payroll and ensure 409a elections and matching are correct.
  • Work with HR Department to ensure 401k compliance and help with annual 401k audit.
  • Comply with local, state and federal government reporting requirements and prepare payroll tax and property tax filing.
  • Prepare annual W-2’s.
  • Prepare and file annual business license renewals for various state and local jurisdictions in which Sumter Utilities operates.
  • Responsible for annual review of financial statements. Work closely with local accounting firm and Quanta for timely completion of review.
  • Along with CFO and Controller, work with Internal Audit on annual internal audits.
  • Along with CFO, Controller, and President, prepare the Annual Business Plan.
  • Manage accounting software and troubleshoot issues with support.
  • Responsible for monthly financial reporting to Quanta from initial data load to final submission.
  • Prepare and submit to Quanta reports and variance explanations as requested.
  • Cross-train with Controller on key tasks and duties.
  • Continually evaluate processes and identify opportunities for improvements.
  • Willingly accept assignments to perform special projects or perform other duties not listed above, which may vary as determined by management or Quanta to meet company needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • CPA preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience 
  • Strong understanding of GAAP
  • Excel proficiency, including pivot and v-look up tables
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Stong communication and interpersonal skills
